Daily Tribune - Dylan Cade Williams, who was recruited by and signed to join the Louisiana State University (LSU) baseball team, was arrested and charged with statutory rape as well as 3 counts of child molestation on Monday, December 16, 2013.
18-Year old Williams allegedly had sex with a 14-year old female in October of 2013. The girls parents were the first to contact authorities who conducted an investigation resulting in the 6’4 195 pound pitcher turning himself into the Bartow County jail Monday.
Also in October, Dylan was also indicted by a grand jury on 2 counts of possession of a controlled substance, ecstacy or ‘molly’, with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm during commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies and possession of marijuana. Both drug charges are violations of Georgia’s Controlled Substance Act (VGSCA).
On July 23rd, 2013, Williams was arrested along with 6 others, Brandon Shea Etheridge, 18, Samuel Lawrence Ayers, 18, Dustin Bradley Bush, 18, Timothy Glen Etheridge, 54, Christi Lynn Etheridge, 49, and Christopher Lee Willingham, 24.
He and the others were under investigation by a Bartow-Cartersville task force created to monitor illegal drug activity in Cartersville, Georgia. The initial marijuana charges waged against Williams included ‘intent to distribute’.
The former Cass High School of White, GA athlete signed a letter of intent to play at LSU under head coach Paul Mainieri. Upon hearing news of Dylan’s arrest in July, coach Mainieri spoke with the 18-year old’s father who assured him his son ‘was at the wrong place at the wrong time‘. Coach Mainieri stated “It doesn’t appear to me that the boy has done anything he should be ashamed of…I have to let the process play itself out” He has also recently said ‘Dylan isn’t welcome in the program as long as his legal problems are looming’.
Williams was held without bond on Wednesday and currently remains in jail.
I don’t think Dylan’s father’s excuse of ‘he was at the wrong place at the wrong time’ will work this time’. Wow, what a rise and fall.
You go from signing to a big-time baseball program where your almost guaranteed to get drafted since there are so many MLB teams to catching drug and weapons charges to catching rape and molestation charges.
Dylan’s new charge would normally be the nail in the coffin…if Dylan wasn’t white. I’m not saying whites get away with anything I’m just saying non-white athletes get away with nothing.
Allen Iverson almost never made it to college because of a brawl he was in at a bowling alley that involved multiple people. And at the age of 17, he was convicted and actually ended up going to jail for the fight. Luckily for Iverson, there was a black coach, John Thompson, who would take a ‘chance’ on Iverson.
I guess being the Associated Press high school player of the year for basketball AND football prior the incident wasn’t enough for the other blue-chip programs to take a ‘chance’ on Iverson.
Even with the fight, Allen Iverson would have had every school knocking on his door if he were white and from a suburb. I don’t even want to think about what would have happened to Iverson if he was charged with the same crimes Dylan has been charged with, he’d probably be in jail for life.
But Dylan isn’t Iverson and Dylan will probably get a 3rd, 4th, and 5th chance to achieve his dream of being a professional baseball player.
